Last month, the Boston City Council passed an ordinance making it easier than ever for budding Hub entrepreneurs to get food truck permits. Which means that in the near future, there might be a taco truck parked right outside your house. Hell, you might even have parked it there.
It also means that this summer will be full of new spots all over the city to get sandwiches, fries, cupcakes—whatever you can get your grease-stained mitts on. SoWa Open Market is one of those places. Every Sunday, a rotating group of nine food trucks gather on Harrison Ave., peddling their treats at the “Food Truck Court.”
If you can’t make it to SoWa this Sunday, don’t fret—they are mobile after all—they park at other places, too—you just have to find them. Don’t worry. We can help.
BON ME TRUCK
Bon Me, or banh mi, are those Vietnamese sandwiches you probably recognize from various spots over Chinatown or one of the Super 88s. Their attraction lies in their good deal: banh mi is usually cheap and always delicious. The Bon Me Truck serves a toasted baguette with picked carrot, daikon, cucumbers, cilantro, topped with housemade pate for a solid $6. Pair with a Vietnamese iced coffee for some serious frugal fare. CLOVER FOOD TRUCK
The hype surrounding Clover Food Truck exploded over the past year and for once, it’s understandable. They serve healthy, hearty, locavore-friendly “fast food.” Clover just opened a permanent location in Harvard Square, but they still have trucks open all over the city and the company continues to expand. Try the chickpea fritter with a cup of pour-over coffee for $8. Or, just get a beer—Clover just started serving Peak Organic IPA for $3 a pop. THE CUPCAKORY
Fair warning, cash only. Pay off, totally worth it. Salted caramel cupcakes. Lemon and vanilla cupcakes. Chocolate on chocolate cupcakes. Vegan cupcakes. Cupcakes! Cupcakes in a truck!
[Green St. and Harvard St., Coolidge Corner, Brookline. Fri Noon-6pm. 12 South St., Jamaica Plain. Sat 12pm-5pm. cupcakory.com]
ROXY’S GOURMET GRILLED CHEESE
Skeptics are invited to pop on over to Roxy’s Facebook page, where they’ll find a wall post that reads: “Well worth the 3 hour wait, thanks Roxy’s gang!” So there. What makes their queso so friggin’ special? Well, see, it’s mac and chorizo grilled cheese. It’s lots and lots of different kinds of grilled cheese. It’s your favorite things, to eat, made better. So there again. If you don’t see Roxy’s at SoWa, it’s probably because they’re on a cross-country tour competing in the Food Network’s Great Food Truck Race. However, they’ll still be around Boston this summer—we recommend following their Foursquare for updates on their whereabouts. [Beacon St. and Chestnut Hill Ave., Cleveland Circle, Boston.
