His pale, bespectacled face looms everywhere: car salesman, actor, frontman for Ernie and the Automatics. But Ernie Boch, Jr., strident tackle-sport savior, purchased and resurrected the Independent Women’s Football League (IWFL)’s Boston Militia a couple of years ago when they went under. Today, team owner; tomorrow, the world.
WHAT IS THE STRANGEST PIECE OF MILITIA LICENSED-GEAR YOU’VE SEEN?
Well, we’re only going on our second year, so I only have the usual stuff: T-Shirts, sweatshirts, water bottles. I don’t have anything crazy yet; I’m working on that. I mean, the idea that this is a female team and these girls, they look … I mean, when they’re not on the field, and they don’t have the uniforms on, they look amazing! I mean, they look really, really amazing. So I’m going to try to play off that, but I haven’t figured out how.
WHEN A VISITING OWNER COMES TO TOWN AND YOU WANT TO SCHMOOZE, WHERE DO YOU TAKE THEM?
You know Tresca’s? That’s a great place. [Also] Grill 23 and the Capital Grille. Tresca’s one of the few places where I can just go and say, "Feed me," and they’ll just make it, and I don’t even have to order. I love that. If the [team] owner is a little "different," you know, and he didn’t want a steak or anything, I’d go to Douzo and have some sushi.
WHERE DO YOU GO IN BOSTON IF DON’T WANT TO BE RECOGNIZED?
The end of the bar at Ciao Bella’s is a great place. The corner of 29, I like it there. You know, the hotel bars during the day are pretty empty and that’s a great place to hide. The Four Seasons, the new Ritz, Fifteen Beacon … those are great bars.
HOW DOES YOUR LOOK COME TOGETHER?
If I’m going to the game, I’m wearing my Boston Militia shirt with my Boston Militia sweatshirt and my Boston Militia sweatpants and my Boston Militia jacket. All sponsored by Under Armour. If I had to wear a tie, I mean, with all due respect to the Krafts, their ties are way too wide. Waaaaaay too wiiiiide. If I had to wear a suit, I’d put a nice suit on with a nice thin tie. I wear Brioni and I always shop at Louis [Boston].
