If you’ve ever read Dan Savage’s “Savage Love” column (which we syndicate), you know the man holds nothing back. Which can upset a lot of people.
At a high school journalism convention in Seattle, Savage came to the topics of gay rights and religion. Savage’s main argument was that there’s a lot of outdated, offensive, inhumane, ridiculous, and horrible things in the Bible, particularly the books about Leviticus and Deuteronomy, that we already ignore — why not ignore the anti-gay sections?
“We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about gay people,” said Savage, “the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation… We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things.”
As soon as he started this section of his speech, a handful of people started to file out. In the video you can see more and more people get up and leave as he lands on the topic of slavery, calling the Bible “a radically pro-slavery document.”
Savage, founder of the It Gets Better Project, ended his thoughts on the Bible — or rather, how people abuse the archaic sections of the Bible — and invited everyone who walked out to come back in.
“It’s funny, as someone who’s on the receiving end of beatings that are justified by the Bible, how pansy-ass some people react,” Savage said.
He apologized if hurt anyone’s feelings, but reminded the audience he has the right to defend himself.
