We’re getting used to this
Over the past two Wednesdays, we’ve debuted live videos by Bent Knee recorded during a series of sessions at the Hand Forged Iron Works in North Andover, and today that continues with the premiere of a new clip for “Leak Water.” Similarly dynamic, but maybe even more nuanced and textured than the previous videos, “Leak Water” just confirms how bummed we are going to be this time next week, when the last video in the series goes up. Until then, enjoy this one.

I wrote the first version of Leak Water almost exactly a year ago, in the back seat of our tour van on the way to SXSW. The song is about things that are hard to communicate in a family, and about how it’s impossible for one single family member to pull everyone back together during rough times.

I think many girls and women have had the experience of being propped up in front of a mirror while wincing in pain as their mother combs through knots in their hair. There’s something strange about that yanking pain, the hint of vanity in wanting to look beautiful, and the pressure to ‘look presentable’ so not to shame ‘the family’. That’s just one example, but I think there are a lot of odd scenes that get folded into the inside/outside dichotomy of a family, or a mother-daughter relationship. Leak Water is about that discord, and also the internal conflict of growing out of a family while still loving it very much.
