Mary Shelley’s famed tale of the “modern Prometheus” is a story so ingrained in our culture it approaches genre-status. Variations on “the Creature” aren’t retellings of the original as much as they are entries in larger, thematically similar body of work, no different than action films or romance novels. This broadcast of the Danny Boyle-directed, Benedict Cumberbatch-starring (in both roles!) play errs closer to the Victorian source material than the classic Universal flick. Barring the game show framing device, of course. Remember: in a bind, guess “hubris.”
