TED | PUNIC
Seth MacFarlane takes yet another play from Matt Stone and Trey Parker’s playbook by branching out into legitimacy with the surprisingly appealing Ted. Filmed right here in Boston, it follows Mark Wahlberg as a grown up who lives with his also-grown up teddy bear 27 years after wishing it to come alive. Now it’s as much of a foul-mouthed townie as he is. [R | Wide Release, Fri 6.29.12]
MAGIC MIKE | MASTICATION
Former stripper and current name we now know for some reason, Channing Tatum gets the 8 Mile treatment from Steven Soderbergh with a semi-autobiographical tale of a male stripper who strips, goes on a date with a stripper friend’s sister while they talk about how weird it is that he’s a male stripper, and also sometimes we see him strip. [R | Wide Release, Fri 6.29.12]
THE TURIN HORSE | PROSTRATE
In 1889, Nietzsche famously collapsed onto a horse as it was being flogged, fortelling the deep mental breakdown that was about to consume him. But what ever happened to the horse? Influential Hungarian director Béla Tarr—influential in the “remodernist” movement—approaches this subject with his famous long, uninterrupted takes. If that sounds interesting, go for it. If it sounds boring, pass. [NR | Museum of Fine Arts, Thu 6.28.12]
MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION | “DIG” WHEN SAID TOO QUICKLY
We’ll spare you the summary. If you’re going to see it, you probably already know the deal by now. If you decide to give Tyler Perry your money, we’ll just leave you with this tidbit of information: exactly two of his movies have broken 60% on Rotten Tomatoes (and one of them was Star Trek, doesn’t count), but the worse their score, the more money they tend to make. [PG-13 | Wide release, Fri 6.29.12]
