You may not be able to judge a book by its cover, but you can judge a sitcom by its network. How I Met Your Mother (Season 7 out now on 20th Century Fox), a CBS cash-cow,
is as insipid as you’d expect from the channel that gave you Everybody Loves Raymond (which, for the record, was terrible).
The problem with network comedy is it can’t risk offending Joe Average. So you’re left with HIMYM, whose “edgiest” jokes deal with peeing in front of your boyfriend.
Unfortunately, popularity doesn’t equal quality: Universal acceptance probably means you’re just not trying that hard.
HIMYM is very gettable … and, therefore, bland.
