Under clear skies, Boston Calling kicked off with a headlining set from Foo Fighters; though the late Taylor Hawkins wasn’t mentioned by name, his presence was felt everywhere, with fans wearing Hawkins shirts, Grohl’s comment that songs written 20-25 years ago can take on new meaning as life happens, and Taylor’s son Shane coming on to fill in on drums during “I’ll Stick Around.” New guy Josh Freese acquitted himself nicely and his “Fingers Crossed For The New Guy” shirt was a funny and self-deprecating touch.
