Whether on purpose or by chance, EvillDewer picked damn near the perfect time to release his new collaborative project with Haze (of the Mass rap act Main Aim) Outer Limits: this is a rainy day hip hop record made for headphone listening. EvillDewer’s production is awash in the psychedelic vibe and twitchy samples he typically favors, but he always maintains control of the seemingly chaotic atmosphere; witness how “Elevated” slowly creeps into a hypnotic groove through hazy chimes and murmuring bass while spacey sound effects swarm left and right. In Haze, he finds a natural collaborator; his clean delivery and versatile wit can adapt to the bright horns of the soulful “Beautiful Struggle” or the quivering strings on the paranoid “Meat Cleavers.” The pair combine to make something both experimental and accessible, and it should still sound awesome when it finally stops raining too.
