‘LOVE ME BACK’ IS A GLIMPSE OF SEER GROUP’S ELECTRO-POP CRAFTMANSHIP

LABEL | SELF-RELEASED

There are approximately 14 billion electronic music acts releasing free albums on Bandcamp or Soundcloud every week, and that abyss is far too anonymous a place for something like Seer Group. Nor does their five-track sophomore EP feel like an adequate canvas on which to display the full talents of this 12-person group, but even this quick glimpse of their electro-pop craftsmanship is worth seeking out in the wilderness. “Love Me Back” sounds like a leftover from the Drive soundtrack; it’s both a sticky synth pop cut and midnight highway driving music, the dark groove suggesting something sinister under the hook’s desperate pleas. “Kicking In” is more direct but no less engaging, a hazy lounge thump luxuriating behind the vocals. But the gorgeous seven-minute “To My Surprise” hints at bigger possibilities: Horns give it pulse, then give way to bass, percussion and lithe vocals, and finally strings and piano.
