SEEING SOUNDS: BOSTON CALLING ART CONTEST RETURNS

If you’re a band hoping to perform at Boston Calling, better start practicing for the Fall. If you’re an artist, however, better start getting ready for your big chance now.

As anticipation continues to build for the May edition of Boston Calling, the festival has announced the return of Blank Canvas, an open art competition in which five artists will be chosen to create a mural for display on City Hall Plaza at the event on May 22-24.

In addition to displaying your work in an open-air gallery with about 20,000 guests, the contest, open to national and local artists, offers some enticing incentives: the winners will receive a $750 cash prize (plus $250 for supplies) and a three-day VIP pass to the festival.

According to a press release from the Boston Calling team, “all submissions must be two-dimensional and should take into consideration the fact that they will be displayed outdoors within Boston Calling’s festival footprint at City Hall Plaza; all murals must be able to be stretched on a backing wooden frame in sizes of 5-8 feet long and 4-6 feet high. Each submission must be accompanied with the artist’s name, contact information and a 100-word description of the submission.”

Submissions are due by April 10, and winners will be notified by April 24, after which they’ll have four weeks to actually create the mural.

Make it a good one — you never know who might be watching.
