Jessimae Peluso: A Very Freaky Gurl
by Chris Carpenter
As the zaniest cast member of seasons 1 and 2 of MTV’s hit series Girl Code – professional silly goose (and former Boston dweller!), Jessimae Peluso, is in the midst of rising to comedic superstardom. When she isn’t busy talking about tampons and such on MTV’s programming—she’s receiving accolades like being named ‘one of the funniest comics to follow on Twitter’ by the likes of Huffington Post. And, she, like, totally is! Homegirl’s tweets are bonkers city. Jessimae is bringing her biting comedy style to Laugh Boston for a three evenings of debauchery. Get ready, folks – it’s bound to be a wild ride.
So, boo. You’re going to be spending Valentine’s Day at Laugh Boston—how great is that?
I know! I’m so excited. We’re going to be all romantical together, right?
Best believe.
Are you single?
Uh, well, I’m currently married at the moment.
Okay, whatever! Let me break this down real quick; we’ll just have a ménage à trois! I’m down. Who cares?
Sounds fun. Ménages aside, are you excited to be back in the bean?
Of course! Boston is where I got my start. I did improv with the [now demised] improv group, The Tribe. And then I started doing standup at the Cantab Lounge in the Third Rail—that’s what the room was called because, you know, that third rail on the subway is how you get electrocuted. And let me tell you, there were so many shows were I really wanted to electrocute myself—holy shit. But man, I love Boston. I used to go out and drink all the time at the Beantown Pub and do choreographed Michael Jackson routines at, like, 6 or 7 on a Monday night.
That’s glorious. It’s sound like you really know how to live life.
I don’t mess around.
Tell us how Girl Code helped shift your career.
The show was the perfect platform for me. I was able to write all of my own stuff. I incorporated some of my jokes from my standup sets. And the girls who watch the show are like, super, rabid. I feel like I’m Chris Brown before he started punching shit—I feel like I’m that popular. I love it, because—comics—we’re all damaged clowns. I call myself an insecure narcissist.
Aw, sad face.
I’m nuts. All girls are. You know this. But the Girl Code fan-girls, man. Wow. One time, this one fan-girl chick was in line after a show and she kept tweeting at me like, ‘I got weed for you! I got weed for you! I’ll bring you weed.’ And, like, I didn’t ask for it. [Laughs] After the show, she gave me a hug and put the weed in my pocket. It was a Ziploc bag of 3 perfectly rolled joints—and, let me tell you, it was the best weed I ever had.
That was super generous of her.
I know—it was so nice of her! Another time, I was in Canada doing shows and another fan gave me some weed. I guess every just thinks I’m a pothead. But I’m not. I just really like tequila.
