JOHN DENSMORE OF THE DOORS UNHINGED

JOHN-DENSMORE-doors

I quoted Robby in this piece I wrote for The Nation that got syndicated in Rolling Stone and the London Guardian, saying, ‘In the short run we might lose some dough, but in the long run our songs will mature and maybe be worth more dough.’

This is after he heard that someone decided not to commit suicide because of hearing one of our songs. That’s the point. It was a soundtrack for people’s lives. To me, that’s kind of a precious relationship, and I don’t want to distort that. Continue reading

DIG THIS: WORKING WORDS

mllieber

In addition to tending the raddest beard ever to come out of Detroit, the poet, professor, populist, M.L. Liebler somehow found the time to cobble together an anthology of blue-collar paeans and between-paycheck prose, a collection awesomely entitled Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking Out the Jams. Liebler will be in Cambridge this evening, reading selections from the work, alongside his good buddy, Al Fucking Cooper. Continue reading

THE LOST CYCLIST @ PORTER SQUARE BOOKS

While most of modern history is just sickly folks in loungewear arguing with each other, every now and then you run into a historical event so unabashedly rad that you have to wonder if some grad student snuck it in there for giggles. Such is the case of Frank Lenz, BMX champ of his day, who turned his status as a star of the penny-farthing circuit into a platform to pimp the newfangled safety bicycle, before disappearing in Turkey under mysterious (murderous) circumstances. Velocipede historian David Herlihy captures the tale of Lenz’ fate in The Lost Cyclist, which he’s reading from at Porter Square Books.
