As a genre, death metal is pretty limiting in terms of creating a giant fan base, despite Jim Carrey’s best efforts at proselytizing. but there are pockets of highly invested enthusiasts all over the world. Local enthusiasts got a rare treat as the rejuvenated Florida outfit Obituary is back and touring in support of a new record. As guys who were one of the first to rise from the fetid beginnings of the form, they are clearly masters and put on a DINT DINT clinic that likely spawned dozens of cases of headbanger’s neck sprain. Doomsters with a touch for elegantly melodic vocals, Pallbearer played a strong set that bridged the two worlds of smothering heaviness and keening sorrow. Ohio’s Skeletonwitch took put their own rust belt spin on things, a frenzied mix of thrash with flashes of old school NWOBMH flair, while Germany’s Dust Bolt kicked things off as the room started fill. Sunday night shows need a strong bill to fill a room, and tonight ticked that box (aside from the hole in middle that was the black hole of the semi-violent mosh pit).

Check out some of the action!
