If tragedy plus time equals comedy, then between the culture shock of crossing the pond twice and a brush with cancer, you’d think that Bishop would have to wait a lifetime to make things funny. But he figured it all out pretty quickly.

If nothing else, it’s a great way to network within the tech community, at an event that includes everybody from engineers to social media mavens, and in the end you help people with cancer simply by cleaning your room and going to a party.

I covered his administration. I would often stalk him by his black SUV in the horseshoe driveway in back of City Hall to press him on the news of the day. Some days, he’d be furious with me about something I had written. Other times, he’d shrug the hit off with a snarky quip. The man was not short on wit.
