LISTEN: CAMINO INVITES YOU TO ‘PRIVATE TUMBLR’ AHEAD OF ALBUM RELEASE

Before we start, it might be a good idea to reference Boston producer Camino’s next-to-latest track, last month’s “Eyebrows on Fleek,” if you aren’t already familiar; like a first course, it sets up the rest of the meal to follow, which should come in the guise of his debut album Freshman 15, out March 10 on bandcamp. “Fleek” is all flavor, a beefy slab of house beat seasoned with lush disco strings, vocoder vocals, freaky jazz vibes, electro organs, pretty much everything but Big Mac special sauce. It pulses with an infectiously upbeat, free-for-all energy that already gives Camino an early signature sound.

Hearing “Fleek” underscores the elegant downshift by Camino on his new track “Private Tumblr”; this feels more like a chilled palette cleanser than a full second course, a possible tease at the broader range we might hear on the album. The track is no less likely to incite spontaneous dance parties, but it generates the same amount of power with a smoother touch. The kick drums and bass are given more room to breathe a disco vibe, the vocal arrangement flows seamlessly in and out of focus, and we get something like a warped, caffeinated outtake from Michael Jackson’s Off the Wall. It’s an unassuming and quick and very catchy 3.5 minutes.

Like what Camino’s been cooking up? Have him serve it to you himself at the Freshman 15 Album Release Party at Wonder Bar next Friday, March 6.
